Is God Angry With Me?

Recently I was sharing the story of Jonah with my two-year old. It’s an exciting and dramatic story for children, right? Jonah running away from God and the big fish swallowing Jonah and then spitting him out after three days and three nights!

Actually, the book of Jonah beautifully reflects the merciful and tender heart of God. God wanted Jonah to go to the wicked city of Nineveh and preach against it, but Jonah didn’t want to.

Here is what is so thought worthy:

In His love, God did not give up on the people of Nineveh. In fact, He was determined to give them one more chance.

Many times when people offend or hurt us, we are quick to disconnect from them and show no mercy. But look at the heart of God- It just blows my mind! The people of Nineveh deserved God’s wrath, yet God was so persistent in making sure that someone speaks to them before that, and Jonah was the one who was “kind-of-available”.

And, we all know what happened, right? The people of Nineveh repented of their evil ways and turned back to God.
I feel that’s always the heart of God!

Many times when things go wrong, we feel God is upset with us or not compassionate towards our situation. But look at what His Word says in Psalm 103:8,9 NLT, The Lord is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He will not constantly accuse us, nor remain angry forever.

This nature of God is consistent throughout the Bible. He keeps showing mercy and giving grace to His people.

When Israelites were passing through the wilderness led by Moses, God’s anger was kindled by their repeated disobedience, idolatry, and lack of faith. He wanted to destroy them (Exodus 32:10), but look at this perceptive – He found a Moses who stood in the gap for them (Exodus 32:12).

And what did God do?

“So the Lord relented from the harm which He said He would do to His people.” (Exodus 32:14)

God is not looking for a reason to destroy, but to forgive and love. Even when God is justly angry, He shows that He desires mercy. He is waiting for someone to stand in the gap—someone who reflects His own heart back to Him.

Moses did that.

And ultimately, Jesus did it perfectly.

It is the devil who constantly accuses us of our wrongdoings and condemns us.

Let me tell you this, I have tasted this God and He has never ever disappointed me. I have disappointed Him many times but He has never failed me, not even once.

Beloved, let these words break the power of condemnation from your life, because we serve a loving and a merciful God.

So, is God angry with you? No, He is waiting for you to run into His arms of mercy.

Stay humble and stay rooted in His love!
