Breaking Through the Walls of the Impossible
There are moments in life when we come face to face with situations that seem impossible. Circumstances may look too strong, too fortified, too deeply rooted to ever change. But the story of the walls of Jericho reminds us of a powerful truth: when the power of God meets obedience, impossibilities come crashing down.
Today, let us look deeper into this incredible moment in Scripture and understand how faith, obedience, waiting, and God’s power worked together to bring victory to the children of Israel.
The Walls of Jericho: A Picture of the Impossible
The Bible says in Joshua 6:1:
“Now Jericho was securely shut up because of the children of Israel; none went out, and none came in.”
Jericho was not an ordinary city. It was heavily fortified with massive walls that served as protection against enemies. It looked impossible to penetrate. Humanly speaking, there was no way for the Israelites to enter and conquer it.
Jericho was also a gateway city into Canaan, the Promised Land. Before the Israelites could fully step into what God had promised them, they first had to face this seemingly impossible obstacle.
And isn’t that often how life feels?
Sometimes, right before we step into God’s promises, we encounter walls that seem bigger than our faith.
Faith and Obedience Go Hand in Hand
The Lord gave Joshua very clear instructions.
Joshua 6:2–5:
And the Lord said to Joshua: ‘See! I have given Jericho into your hand, its king, and the mighty men of valor. You shall march around the city, all you men of war; you shall go all around the city once. This you shall do six days. And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark. But the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. It shall come to pass, when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, that all the people shall shout with a great shout; then the wall of the city will fall down flat. And the people shall go up every man straight before him.
Notice something important here: God did not simply promise victory, He also gave instructions.
The Israelites had to march, the priests had to blow the trumpets, the people had to shout.
And all of this had to happen exactly as God commanded. So their obedience mattered.
Faith and obedience are deeply connected. You cannot truly obey God without faith, and genuine faith will always produce obedience.
The Israelites trusted God enough to follow every instruction, even when the outcome seemed impossible. And because they obeyed, they witnessed the impossible become possible.
The Power of God behind the Shout
The walls of Jericho were massive, fortified, and secure. They were not weak structures that could collapse from noise alone. These walls were designed to withstand attacks.
Yet, when the people obeyed God completely and shouted, His power was released.
That is the beauty of walking with God. He often asks us to take steps of obedience that may not make sense naturally, but when we obey, His supernatural power meets our surrender.
Faith Does Not Need to See the Full Picture
One thing that stands out in this story is that the Israelites did not question God’s method.
They did not say:
“How will marching help?”
“How can shouting bring walls down?”
“What if this doesn’t work?”
They simply obeyed.
God did not give them a detailed explanation or a visual demonstration of how the walls would collapse. Everything was done by faith. And that is how God works in our lives too.
2 Corinthians 5:7 says, For we walk by faith, not by sight. Sometimes God expects us to trust Him before we fully understand Him.
The Importance of the Waiting Season
Another powerful detail in this story is the waiting period. The Israelites did not see the walls fall on the first day. Or the second. Or even the sixth. They had to wait until the seventh day. There was a process. And throughout Scripture, we see that waiting is part of God’s preparation.
Abraham waited many years before Isaac was born. David waited years before becoming king. Joseph waited through seasons of betrayal and imprisonment before stepping into leadership.
Waiting is not punishment, it is preparation. It teaches us dependence on God. Just as software needs regular updates, our spiritual strength also needs to be renewed.
The Bible says in Isaiah 40:31:
But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.
Something happens when we wait on God. Our strength is renewed, our trust deepens and our faith grows stronger.
God’s Backing Makes the Difference
Think about this: the Israelites could have marched around those walls fifty times or even a hundred times without success if God had not backed them up.
The victory was not in what they did, but in God’s presence behind what they did.
This is why we cannot simply copy what someone else is doing and expect the same results. Every person’s journey is different. What matters most is not imitation, but obedience to what God is personally instructing you to do.
The Bible says in Proverbs 3:5–6, Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.
When God leads you and you obey Him, He also gives you the grace and strength to carry it out.
We need God in every area of our lives be it in our marriages, careers, parenting, health, finances etc. Apart from Him, we can do nothing (John 15:5). Without God’s backing, we fall flat. But with Him, we overcome.
God Still Breaks Impossible Walls Today
Maybe today you are facing your own “Jericho wall.” Perhaps it is a financial struggle, a broken relationship, a delayed promise, a health issue or an emotional battle that feels impossible to overcome.
But let this story remind you: God is still the God who brings walls down. If He has promised victory, He will fulfil His Word.
The walls of Jericho did not fall because of human strength. They fell because people trusted God enough to obey Him completely. So today, keep trusting. Keep obeying. Keep waiting on the Lord. The same God who brought down the walls of Jericho is still moving powerfully today.
A Prayer for Breakthrough
If you are going through an impossible situation right now, I want to pray with you.
Heavenly Father,
Right now, I place every person reading this into Your hands. Lord, for every impossible situation they are facing, I pray that You would release faith into their hearts.Father, where there is discouragement, bring strength. Where there is fear, bring trust. Where there is confusion, release wisdom.
Lord, I pray that as they wait upon You, You would renew their strength according to Your Word. Help them to obey You fully and trust You even when they cannot see the full picture.
Every wall standing before them, let it come down in the name of Jesus. Every stagnant situation, every delay, every closed door, every mountain that seems impossible to move, I release your breakthrough right now.
We thank You Father because victory belongs to Your children.
In Jesus’ mighty name,
Amen.
