From time to time I have those things that bother me that is not godly. The Bible calls it ungodly sorrows.
Let me explain this to you…with the verse from 2 Corinthians 7:10, “For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death.”
It is ok to be sorrowful. But there is a sorrow that is godly and there is a sorrow that is ungodly. Those sadness that is caused by desires that are not God centred are ungodly sorrows.
It is interesting how the Word of God clearly states that the, “worldly sorrow, ..results in spiritual death.” Every time you allow your mind to have those thoughts that causes sorrow that which is not aligned to the will of God, you allow yourself to drift away from God.
Your grief against what God has asked you to grieve, grieves the Holy Spirit. Oh how painful that is to hurt the precious Holy Spirit whom our Lord Jesus has given us, by distrusting Him in our situations.
What hurts me the most is when I allow ungodly sorrows to take the place of godly sorrows in my heart. The cry for the things of God should not be silenced by the cry for the things of the world.
I once heard my hubby Shyju’s mentor say, “What causes hurt to the heart of God, should cause grief to our hearts.”
I don’t want to be worrying about friends that I don’t have when I can be worrying about the souls that are not saved. I don’t want to be worrying about the best conditions of life when I can worry about the Christians living a lukewarm life. I don’t want to worry about people that cause disappointments when I can cry out for more holiness in our lives.
Sometimes God uses sorrow to draw us closer to Him. But do not allow that sorrow to consume you, leading to the backsliding of the heart. Luke 22:45 reminds us how sorrow can physically exhaust you.
For us to have sorrows that are godly, we must allow our hearts and minds to be filled with the things of God. I urge you brothers and sisters in Christ that you would ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with godly sorrows!
I pray that every believer will come to that maturity where they are consumed by godly sorrows!
